Published in: Bearing Selection Guides
First, bearing rollers and bearing wheels both utilize bearings to achieve low-friction rolling. However, their design focuses are not exactly the same. Bearing rollers emphasize load-bearing, guiding, and continuous operation. Consequently, they are often used in cam mechanisms and conveyor systems. Additionally, automated equipment and machine tool guide rails use them frequently. On the other hand, bearing wheels emphasize the supporting or moving functions of the “wheel”. Typically, they combine standard bearings with plastic, polyurethane, or metal wheel bodies. Therefore, A truly reasonable selection is not simply pursuing higher-grade or more expensive materials, but matching according to the usage scenario, load, environment, dimensions, bearing model, coating material, and cost.
Foshan AOC Bearing Co., Ltd. (AOC Bearing) has long been engaged in the production and application research of miniature bearings and coated bearings. We pay more attention to the matching relationship between different bearing structures, materials, and industry application scenarios, because only when the right product appears in the right place can we guarantee performance while controlling procurement costs, trial-and-error costs, and later after-sales risks.
1. What is a bearing roller?
A bearing roller can be understood as a component with a bearing as its core, primarily undertaking rolling load-bearing and guiding tasks. Its design focus is usually on withstanding radial loads, impact loads, and high-frequency continuous operation, and it can be directly installed on shafts, bolts, or guide rail mechanisms according to its structure.
Common applications include: cam mechanisms, machine tool guide rails, material conveying systems, metallurgical equipment, automated production lines, and other mechanical structures requiring repetitive rolling or guiding.
These products often focus more on load capacity, rotational speed, track contact form, installation accuracy, lubrication, and sealing factors. Therefore, selection cannot be based solely on external dimensions.
2. What is a bearing wheel?
Conversely, the core of a bearing wheel is the “wheel”, and the bearing is the key component inside the wheel body used to reduce friction and ensure smooth rotation. It can be composed of a standard bearing combined with a plastic, polyurethane, rubber, or metal wheel body, or it can be designed into different shapes such as U-shaped, V-shaped, H-shaped, arc-shaped, or flat wheels according to the track, door/window profile, or equipment structure.
Common applications include: casters, conveyors, sliding doors, door and window pulleys, furniture pulleys, printing equipment, automated equipment guide wheels, and other structures requiring low-friction movement.
Compared to simple bearings, bearing wheels can also adjust performance aspects such as wear resistance, quietness, anti-slip, shock absorption, corrosion resistance, or dimensional stability by changing the wheel body material. Therefore, material selection has a great impact on the final usage effect. (See our coated bearings series)
3. What is the difference between bearing rollers and bearing wheels?

| Comparison Item | Bearing Roller | Bearing Wheel |
|---|---|---|
| Design Focus | Load-bearing, guiding, continuous rolling | Supporting, moving, guiding, and wheel body function |
| Typical Structure | Bearing body or roller structure with outer ring profile | Standard bearing + plastic / PU / rubber / metal wheel body |
| Common Applications | Cams, guide rails, conveying, automation, mechanical equipment | Doors/windows, casters, furniture, conveying, equipment guiding |
| Material Focus | Bearing steel, sealing, track contact surface, installation accuracy | Built-in bearing material + outer coating material |
| Customization Focus | Outer ring profile, shaft, screw, guiding surface | Groove profile, outer diameter, width, hardness, color, coating material |
4. How should bearing rollers and bearing wheels be selected?
Fundamentally, the core of selection is not asking “which material is best”. Instead, first clarify the product’s environment, load, dimensions, and required functions. Afterwards, gradually narrow down the scope through elimination.
4.1 Determine the specific usage scenario
First, confirm the product’s use in doors, windows, conveying, or automation. Alternatively, it might be used in furniture or medical equipment. Naturally, different applications have completely different requirements for load-bearing and noise.
4.2 Determine load, speed, and operating frequency
Next, you must understand the actual load borne by a single roller. Additionally, consider operating speed, start-stop frequency, and impact loads. Importantly, even with identical external dimensions, rated loads can vary between models.
4.3 Assess the use environment
Environments such as outdoors, humidity, dust, high temperatures, low temperatures, oil pollution, and chemical media will directly affect the choice of bearing materials, sealing forms, and coating materials. For products exposed to humid or outdoor environments for a long time, anti-corrosion capability is particularly important.
4.4 Confirm key dimensions
Usually, it is necessary to specify the inner diameter, outer diameter, width, groove profile, groove width, groove depth, shaft length, screw dimensions, and allowable tolerances. For rubber-coated or plastic-coated bearing wheels, the built-in bearing dimensions and the final finished product dimensions after coating must also be considered.
4.5 Select built-in bearing model and material
First, evaluate common standard bearing models, if they meet bore requirements. Undoubtedly, standard models offer more supply channels and stable costs. Consequently, they reduce procurement restrictions from special molds.
4.6 Select coating material
Next, select the coating material based on wear resistance, toughness, and hardness. Simultaneously, consider noise, water absorption, and the actual environment. Ultimately, do not judge the final effect based on a single parameter.
4.7 Comprehensively consider cost and supply chain
Finally, compare mold costs, trial cycles, and batch costs if multiple solutions work. Likewise, evaluate supplier substitutability and maintenance costs. In short, a reasonable selection balances performance and procurement stability.
5. How to choose common coating materials?
Generally, common engineering plastics for bearing wheels include TPU, POM, PA, POK, PPSU, and PEEK. Obviously, different materials have different performance focuses. Therefore, actual selection must combine specific grades, hardness, and use conditions.

| Material | Main Advantages | Points to Note | Suitable Working Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| TPU | Good wear resistance and toughness; has certain elasticity and shock absorption | Heat resistance and long-term compression deformation need to be confirmed by grade | Quiet, shock absorption, anti-slip, elastic coating |
| POM | Good rigidity and dimensional stability, self-lubricating, wear-resistant | Notch sensitive; impact and thermal stability need structural assessment | Dimensional stability, low friction, engineering plastic wheel body |
| PA (Nylon) | Good strength, toughness, and wear resistance, widely used in processing | Moisture absorption affects dimensional stability; significant differences between nylon grades | General machinery, guide wheels, pulleys |
| POK | Good wear resistance and toughness, low water absorption, good dimensional stability | Processing window and specific weather resistance need to be confirmed by grade | Wear-resistant, low water absorption, long-term rolling scenarios |
| PPSU | Good heat resistance and hydrolytic stability, adapts to higher temperature environments | High cost; long-term outdoor and specific solvent environments need assessment | High temperature, steam, or special environments |
| PEEK | Outstanding high-temperature resistance, mechanical, and chemical properties | High material and processing costs, high requirements for equipment and processes | High temperature, high performance, and special industrial applications |
Afterwards, remember that material parameters are only part of the selection. For example, always verify outdoor or heavy-load solutions through actual life tests.
6. Bearing wheel selection case in the door and window industry
Here, we take the sliding door and window industry as an example. Below, we show how to gradually complete the bearing wheel selection.

6.1 Application Profile
| Use Environment | Outdoor |
| Single Door Weight | Approx. 120 kg |
| Structural Requirements | U-shaped grooved bearing wheel to reduce the risk of deviation or derailment |
| Inner Bore | 5 mm |
| Pulley Structure | Single row of 4 pulleys; one door installs two pulley groups |
| Finished Dimensions | Width 8 mm ± 0.1 mm; Outer diameter 24 mm ± 0.1 mm |
| Key Requirements | Wear-resistant, load-bearing, anti-corrosion, balancing long-term procurement costs |
6.2 Selection Steps
Step 1: Determine the product type first
Initially, judging from the structure, this application is closer to a “bearing wheel”. Because it requires an external wheel body to form a U-shaped groove. Thus, it fits the track perfectly.
Step 2: Screen built-in bearing models
Next, screen common bearings with a 5 mm inner diameter, such as 605, 695, and 625. Since basic dimensions vary, the achievable wheel thickness differs.
Step 3: Further judge based on load
Among the above candidate models, the basic dimensions of 625 are relatively larger, and it usually has better load-bearing potential under the same series and reasonable design premises. However, the final confirmation should still be based on the static and dynamic load parameters of the specific bearing manufacturer and the actual stress situation of the pulley group, and cannot be judged solely by size.
Step 4: Determine built-in bearing material
Among these, the 625 model’s basic dimensions are relatively larger. Consequently, it usually offers better load-bearing potential. However, final confirmation requires actual static and dynamic load parameters.
Step 5: Select coating material
For door and window rollers that require wear resistance, lower water absorption, and better dimensional stability, engineering plastics such as POK can be prioritized. If the product is exposed to UV rays, temperature changes, or other environmental influences for a long time, a specific grade suitable for the environment should be selected and verified through samples.
Step 6: Form a preliminary plan and verify
Based on the above conditions, a preliminary plan of “S625 stainless steel bearing + POK coating + U-shaped profile + finished outer diameter 24 mm + width 8 mm” can be formed. Before entering mass production, it should still be confirmed through assembly, load-bearing, rolling, wear resistance, and actual environment tests.
7. Why are standard models usually more conducive to cost control?
If conventional bearing models can already meet the design requirements, there is usually no need to use completely non-standard built-in bearings just to “look more advanced”. Standard models mean a more mature market supply and easier comparison of prices, quality, and delivery times from different manufacturers.
Conversely, if a solution requires re-developing molds, in addition to mold costs, it will increase the time costs of design confirmation, mold trials, modifications, and mass production verification. Once the product structure is completely bound to a single supplier’s special mold, it will become difficult to change suppliers later.
Therefore, a reasonable bearing roller or bearing wheel selection should try to strike a balance between performance, standardization degree, procurement freedom, and cost.
8. A few problems most easily overlooked in bearing roller selection
- Only looking at the material price, not the actual use environment.
- Selecting bearings only based on outer and inner diameters, ignoring rated load, speed, and installation method.
- Over-specifying materials to pursue high specifications, causing the product unit price to lose market competitiveness.
- Only looking at wear resistance parameters for coating materials, but ignoring water absorption, temperature, UV, hardness, and structural dimensions.
- Ignoring molds, mold trial cycles, and supplier substitutability, leading to subsequent procurement being restricted by a single solution.
9. The core of selection: Not the most expensive, but the most suitable
Whether choosing a bearing roller or a bearing wheel, one should first clarify “what problem we really need to solve”, and then gradually eliminate unsuitable solutions based on usage scenarios, loads, environments, dimensions, bearing models, materials, and costs.
Over-specifying materials will make the product cost too high and affect market competitiveness; inappropriate material or structural choices may bring about problems such as noise, wear, rust, dimensional changes, after-sales issues, and returns. A truly effective selection is to reduce time costs, financial costs, and trial-and-error costs on the basis of satisfying performance.
